i-to-iTEFL is an acronym for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. The word is often attached to courses or certifications, which indicate a level of training in this area. Many employers scan resumes specifically searching for the words “TEFL Certification” to ensure that the candidate possesses at least the minimum qualification required. For some schools, your TEFL qualification will be enough to secure your position (assuming of course that you are old enough to work/teach within the host country).

TEFL is essentially designed for native English speakers, who do not speak the language of their potential pupils. The course is specially designed to show you how use interactive lessons and games to convey lessons such as vocabulary and grammar. The TEFL courses themselves can be very different depending on the course provider and the level of training which a person has signed up for.

Currently, no international independent accrediting organization is in place to administer the issuing of qualifications. Most TEFL qualification are accredited by organizations and bodies within the home country of the TEFL provider. However, you will find that some TEFL course have been accredited by organizations in a number of countries (like i-to-i courses which are accredited by both the ODLQC and the SQMS).

Another way to fast-track your TEFL career is to invest in further qualifications. The options available to you range from short add-on courses aimed at specialist skill-sets to full diplomas or MA’s that could open doors to the academic side of the business. Add-on courses are the most popular options for first-time tutors. These are relatively cheap, look great on a CV and show your commitment to the industry. Courses in such areas as business English and teaching young learners can help you to specialise your skills so that you can capitalize on the more lucrative sectors of the TEFL industry.

It’s a New Year and the perfect time to start thinking about what you can do differently with your life. If you are like many people stuck in the constant drone of the career ladder you may have started to wonder – Is this really it? Is there more to life? Spending day after day under fluorescent lighting with meetings, targets and deadlines – is it all just becoming too routine? If the hours between 9am and 5pm mean 8 hours of constantly watching the second hand tick around the clock until it rings freedom for you, then it is time for a change!
